Following the numerous US states that are considering sports betting legalization, California, the most populous state, now joins their ranks. Senator Bill Dodd and Assemblyman Adam Gray have proposed a new sports betting bill.
The bill was introduced with several gambling market advancements in mind. First of all, the bill’s sponsors want to see the black market eliminated from California. Secondly, the bill would introduce regulation and customer safety to the activity.
In order for the bill to be implemented, state Constitution would have to be amended. Therefore, a referendum would need to commence. This one of the hurdles that New York mobile betting bill ran into recently.
Despite the potential of sports betting in the largest US state, it can be challenging to approve the bill. As in many states, the gambling industry in California is controlled by tribal operators. They might support wagering, but not private companies providing it. Just like in the recent lawsuit against Valve, Indian operators might not sit well with new competition.
All in all, the new bill does sound promising. However, California legislators are not known for speed when it comes to gambling laws. For instance, an online poker bill cannot be ratified since 2008. Therefore, the sports betting bill might face the same fate.
