In blackjack, doubling down refers to doubling your bet after seeing your initial hand. Such an option is given to every player. Players take this option in hopes of doubling their winnings.
When Should I Double Down?
In general, you should double down when you feel confident in your hand. If you are counting cards, your choice should be made on a case by case basis. If you use basic strategy, it is recommended to double down when receiving these hands:
- Hard 9, a score of 9, received from two cards, neither of which is an ace.
- Hard 10 or 11, scores of 10 or 11, received from two cards, neither of which is an ace.
- Soft 16 to 18, a hand containing an ace and a 5/6/7 (if the dealer’s first card is <6).
