The Japanese game developer Konami has reported that their profit for the first quarter of 2019 increased by 12.1% thanks to the slot machines they produced. The legendary developer of Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid shared that the slot players in land-based casinos have allowed them to increase their annual revenue by 9.6%.
Among other products, Konami famously produces video games, gaming hardware and software. An example of the latter is their plans to develop AI for slot machine improvement. As for slot machines themselves, they’re not the only household Japanese game developer to dabble in gambling. Just take Bandai Namco with its Pac-Man slot as an example.
Out of overall $311.6m profit in 2019 so far, $284.3m comes from the gaming division that produces the slots. Such financial incentive shows that more traditional game developers could turn to make gambling products. This would be an alternative to the current loot boxes links to harmful gambling.
