New York Mobile Betting Approved By Senate

New York state Senate has approved mobile sports betting bill on Monday. Now, it is up to the governor Cuomo, who previously said that mobile betting in NY could be legalized within a month, or the state Assembly to pass the bill.

The new bill would allow remote sports betting on mobile. It will also allow betting in sports venues and on race tracks.

The Senate voted in favor of the bill with a 57-5 landslide vote. However, it might encounter obstacles in the Assembly. This is due to the number of issues that the assembly has to decide on. Moreover, the legislative session in New York has ended on June 19. Therefore, the bill is not coming around anytime soon.

New York will come in late to the legal-mobile-betting-game, as a lot of US states have already legalized it. Nevertheless, the state is not new to sports betting legislation. Back in 2013, a referendum was held to consider allowing sports betting in the state’s casinos. An amendment to the state Constitution was needed for that.

Changes in the Constitution was one of the hurdles for the current bill as well. It was argued that in order to legalize sports betting, another referendum would be needed. However, it was proposed that hosting the servers for mobile apps at the state’s casinos would eliminate such need.
