Street Fighter II: The World Warrior Slot Review (NetEnt)

Back in 1991, Capcom released Street Fighter II, following the release of the original in 1987. Little did they know that their creation would go down as one of the greatest arcade games of all time, and in particular, the most important and influential game ever made. It came with an epic soundtrack, a wide selection of playable characters, special command-based moves, and a more immersive six-button configuration, which could not keep those of us who were privileged to experience the life of the 90s out of our local arcade centers.

Ready for a nostalgic trip down memory lane? The slots universe introduces the Street Fighter II: The World Warrior Slot from the geniuses at NetEnt. Surprisingly, the slot captures every entertaining aspect about the arcade version, only that winning doesn’t involve pressing random buttons frantically hoping to discover secret moves (Young millennials won’t relate *chuckles*).

Slot Rules & Street Fighter II Characters

Upon loading up, the slot presents you with a map showing you where each of the game’s characters hails from. Just like in the original game, you have to select your preferred character to proceed. We bet most of you will be tempted to go for Ryu, but let’s see whether the character you choose will have any influence on the game’s outcome in the long run.

First up in the lineup of playable characters is Dhalsim whose theoretical RTP clocks in at 96.04%. He is a fire-breathing Yogi from India who seeks to amass wealth and use it to help his home village.

Next up is E. Honda with an RTP of 96.05%. He is a sumo wrestler from Japan who is determined to earn his unique fighting style some respect.

Coming in third is the man of the hour himself, Ryu, with a slightly lower RTP of 96.02%. He is a humble and determined Japanese fighter who has mastered the highly effective Hadoken and Shoryuken karate attacks.

Up next is Guile with an RTP of 96.04%. He is a former USA Special Forces operative who seeks to avenge his best friend, Charlie.

Next on the lineup is Zangief with an RTP of 96.08%. He is a pro-wrestler from the USSR (present-day Russia) who is desperate to emphasize the superiority of the Soviet Union with his bare hands.

The only girl from the list, Chun Li, comes in next with an RTP of 96.08%. She is a martial artist from China who seeks to avenge her deceased father.

Second-last on the list is Blanka with an RTP of 96.08%. He is a deformed man from Brazil who yearns for a happier life.

Last but not least is Ken, Ryu’s best friend, with an RTP of 96.06%.

On top of the differences in the Return to Player percentages, each character will also award wilds differently during the wild combo (discussed later). You can preview the number of wilds and how each character will present theirs just below the character’s image when doing your selection.

Inserting the Quarter

Growing up, some of us spent so many quarters on Street Fighter II than we can recall. Well, guess what?  That loathed coin swallower has been replaced with NetEnt’s customer-friendly control tab in the slot version. Players can select a coin/cash bet ranging from €0.2-100 using the up and down bet selectors on the left before hitting the spin or auto-spin button at the center to get the reels spinning.

Besides that, there is the Insert Coin Gamble Feature, which allows you to replay the current level of the bonus round (discussed later) after losing to your opponent. This feature is, however, not available at all casinos.

The Fight

After selecting your character, the game will select an opponent randomly, after which the round commences. Each of the characters will have its high-pay win and defeat symbols battling it out on the reels alongside the low-pay blackjack royal icons. Win symbols, defeat symbols, and blackjack royal icons pay up to 600X, 400X, and 200X respectively.

During the round, a winning combination comprised of one character’s win/defeat symbols is a blow to the other. That will reflect on the health meters above the grid, where points equaling the number of symbols involved in the win will be deducted. The health meters go all the way to 75 health points, meaning that one round may take a while to complete.

Cluster Pays Slot

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is a cluster pays slot. What this means is that triggering wins involves lining up groups of 4 or more identical symbols without having to rely on a typical payline setup.

That sure sounds exciting but it doesn’t stop there! Whenever you land a win, the symbols that triggered it will disappear, causing symbols to gravitate from the top to occupy the empty spaces. If you are lucky, this avalanche could result in a new winning combination, which will lead to a new avalanche and probably another win. In theory, this could go on forever!

Drawing the Power- The Wild Combo

Your selected character will be awarded a wild meter from where he/she will draw powers for the Wild Combo. The meter itself has 7 slots, which fill up with the number of all the high-pay symbols involved in a win during a given round. You will be delighted to find out that the meter can be filled multiple times during the successive tumbles.

When the Wild Combo feature is active, your selected character appears to be drawing power from the meter and showers wilds on the grid using his/her own unique style.

Car Smash Bonus Game

The Car Smash Bonus game will remind you of the series of car, barrel, and drum breaking that followed after every third match of the original game’s single-player mode, where players got to earn additional points. Same here, you will be rewarded with a reward ranging from 5-15 times your bet depending on how well you smash the car.

A win for the Bonus Round

If your character knocks out the opponent, you will gain entry into the tiered bonus round where you get to face off the bosses namely, Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison. There’s a higher probability to land higher wins here than in the base game because each round begins with a full wild meter. Also, each bonus round level has a higher multiplier starting from X2 in the first round to X10 in the last!
