Cut

Cut – splitting the cards of a deck before dealing them out. A deck of cards is divided into 2 parts by one of the players. Prior to this, the cards are shuffled and placed on the table near the gambler (usually, the one who sits to the dealer’s right).

Why do casinos cut cards?

Cutting cards is a tradition tracing back centuries. Originally, it was seen as a necessary measure. By allowing one of the players to cut the cards, the dealer proved that they were dealing fairly and not shuffling to the casino’s advantage.

Today, at most larger land-based casinos, card shuffling is carried out by machines. This makes card cutting superfluous. Nevertheless, cutting cards is still sometimes practiced at such venues for the sake of history and tradition.
