In the context of land-based casinos, a hard count is a popular process for counting coins or chips by weighing them. Hard counting is a two-step process. First, the coins are separated into containers according to their denominations. Then, the coins are weighed using specialized coin counting scales, which are specially configured to derive the coin value from the total weight.
Hard counting usually happens in specialized hard count rooms, but it may also be carried out in the cashier’s cage.
The opposite of a hard count is a soft count in which banknotes are counted.
