In the context of craps, a place bet is a simple, popular wager placed on a point number. A point number is a term used to refer to any of the following numbers: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. The players can either place this bet on a single point number, on several point numbers, or on all of them.
The opposite of a place bet is a lay bet.
How Do Place Bets Play Out?
- If your number is rolled before a 7, you win the wager.
- If a 7 is rolled before your number, you lose the wager.
What Is the Payout for a Place Bet?
Place bets pay out differently, depending on the exact number selected:
- 4s and 10s pay out 9:5
- 5s and 9s pay out 7:5
- 6s and 8s pay out 7:6
How to Make a Place Bet?
To place a place bet in a land-based casino, put your chips in the come area of the craps table layout, get the dealer’s attention, then say “Place the X” (with X being the number you want to bet on).
The dealer will then place your chips on the line below the number. If you win, the dealer will usually automatically assume that you want to leave your bet on the table. If you do not want to do so, you have to say: “Take down my place bets.”
Place bets cannot be placed on a come out roll. The point number needs to be established first.
Are Place Bets Good Bets?
6 / 8 place bets are some of the most popular bets in craps. This is because these bets have a very low house edge of 1.52%. 5 / 9 place bets have a house edge of 4.00%, which makes them a lot less popular. 4 / 10 place bets have a 6.67% house edge, which makes it a very bad bet.
