Sweden Gambling Market Reports €560m Sales in Q1 2019

Sales of the Swedish gambling market were reported at €560m in the first quarter of 2019. Spelinspektionen, the local gambling regulator, has offered these numbers, gathered from the Tax Agency of Sweden.

The sum is impressive when compared to €86.9m from Q1 2018. However, they cannot be compared fairly. This is due to new regulations that came into force this year.

The revenue for the first three months of 2019 was derived from two major categories:

  • Online gaming: €298m
  • Lottery and gambling machines €130.6

Out of these categories, the net revenue was further derived from:

All in all, 78 companies with 123 licenses were the revenue sources. One of these, for example, is Evolution with 73% profit increase in Q1.

The gambling regulator has not accounted for operators working without a Swedish license. However, Spelinspektionen has announced that these numbers would be added soon.

One of the more interesting statistics shows that almost 30,000 people were self-excluded from online casinos in the first three months of 2019. The regulator has long indicated self-exclusion registry as a priority. It even went as far as to issue a $430,000 fine on one of the casinos.

It remains to be seen whether these numbers will keep growing. That is unlikely, due to the possible gambling advertising ban looming over Sweden.
